How to identify genuine stocks vs operator-rigged ones

Signs of genuine, investable stocks

✓ Market cap above ₹5,000 crore
✓ Promoter pledging below 20%
✓ Institutional holding above 20%
✓ Revenue growing 3+ consecutive years
✓ Audited by a reputed firm
✓ Listed on NSE 5+ years
✓ Covered by 3+ reputed brokers
✓ Not on the NSE ASM/GSM surveillance list

Red flags — possible manipulation

⚠ Volume 10×+ normal with no news — the most common manipulation sign
⚠ Price below ₹50 — historically the most rigged zone in India
⚠ Up 100–300% in weeks without any earnings improvement
⚠ Zero institutional holding — no MF, FII or insurer owns it
⚠ Promoter pledging above 60% — distress signal
⚠ SME-listed stock with very thin daily volumes
⚠ Recent name or business-model change without clear reason

The operator playbook — know it so you never fall for it

Operators accumulate quietly at low prices over months, push the price up with coordinated buying, seed WhatsApp and social-media buzz ("sure shot", "operator stock"), retail piles in, and they exit at the top. This is illegal under SEBI's PFUTP regulations — yet it still happens regularly in low-liquidity small caps.
Best protection: stay inside the Nifty 100. If you venture into small caps, check the NSE ASM list at nseindia.com before every buy. Never act on tips without independently verifying fundamentals.

How this screener scores

Five objective criteria: market-cap safety (25 pts), 52-week trend position (20 pts), volume integrity — spikes score zero (20 pts), PE vs the stock's own sector band (20 pts), and price zone — penny territory scores zero (15 pts). Every rule is visible. Nothing is hidden.
