Direct vs regular plan — what the commission actually costs you

Direct plan — final corpus
Regular plan — final corpus
Cost of the commission, over the full period

This is the same fund, same fund manager, same portfolio — the only difference is who keeps the distributor's trail commission baked into the expense ratio.

Picking a fund without getting sold to

✓ Default to the direct plan — same fund, lower cost, no advisor commission
✓ Compare returns against the fund's own category average and benchmark, not just its neighbours
✓ Check 5–10 year consistency, not one standout year
✓ Fund manager tenure is stable and the mandate hasn't changed recently
✓ Expense ratio is at or below the category median
✓ Portfolio concentration and sector bets match what you signed up for
⚠ Chasing last year's #1 ranked fund — chart-topping years rarely repeat
⚠ A high star rating used as the only reason to buy — ratings are backward-looking
⚠ "Guaranteed return" language from anyone selling a mutual fund — no equity fund can promise this
⚠ New Fund Offers (NFOs) marketed on novelty rather than a clear, provable strategy
⚠ Regular plan sold without ever mentioning the direct plan exists
